Bissell Little Green Portable Cleaner Review: The $123 Machine That Erases Stains
Small, corded, loud, and astonishingly effective. The single most useful cleaning machine a pet owner or parent can own.
A cheap, unglamorous, extremely effective spot cleaner - the one cleaning appliance every household with pets or children should own.
What we like
- Strong suction for its size: stains lift instead of smearing
- Set up in under a minute - fill, spray, scrub, extract
- Formula is cheap and the machine pays for itself in saved carpet cleaning
- Small enough to store in a closet and carry to the car
What we don't
- Small tanks mean refills on anything bigger than a chair
- Corded, so you are always near an outlet
- Loud enough to startle pets
The review
The Bissell Little Green is not a beautiful object and it is not quiet. It is a small tank of warm water and formula with a vacuum brush on a hose, and it removes stains that no spray can touch. After two months of coffee, red wine, cat vomit, and a car interior, we think it is the highest-value cleaning purchase in this entire category.
What it actually does
The Little Green is a spot cleaner: warm water and formula are sprayed onto a stain, the brush head agitates, and the vacuum pulls the mess back into a dirty tank. That last part is what no spray bottle can do. It removes the stain and the residue that would otherwise attract new dirt.
In practice the results are closer to a magic trick than a chore. A set-in coffee stain on a light rug disappeared in ninety seconds. Red wine needed two passes. The edge of a car seat that had been 'fine' turned out to hold a remarkable quantity of gray liquid that is now gone.
The tradeoffs
It is corded, loud, and its tanks are small. Cleaning a full sofa means multiple refill trips to the sink. This is a tool for incidents, not for rooms.
None of that matters, because it costs about the same as a single professional carpet cleaning visit and it is permanently on standby in your closet. The value math is not close.
Should you buy it
If you own a pet, have small children, or drive a car with a fabric interior, yes, buy it today. It is the rare cleaning product where the price is low, the performance is exceptional, and the alternative - living with the stain - is worse in every way.

Frequently asked questions
Can it clean an entire room?
Not practically. The tanks and hose are sized for spot and furniture work. For whole rooms, use a full-size carpet cleaner or rent one.
Does it work on car interiors?
Very well. It is one of the most popular uses for this machine, and the hose reaches into seats and floor mats easily.
Do I need Bissell brand formula?
The machine works with most carpet cleaning solutions, but Bissell's own formula is inexpensive, formulated for the machine, and a bottle is included.
