Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) Review: The Smart Thermostat Grows Up
Redesigned for 2024 with a sharper display, Matter support, and smarter savings. It learns your schedule in about a week and quietly pays for itself.
The best smart thermostat if your HVAC system is compatible: it learns your routine, trims real money off your bill, and looks like a designed object rather than a gadget.
What we like
- Larger, sharper edge-lit display that is legible across the room
- Learns a usable schedule in roughly a week with almost no input
- Natively supports Matter, so it works with all three major ecosystems
- Dynamic Focal Eye display reacts to your presence instead of glowing all night
- Real, measurable savings: our bill dropped noticeably in the first season
What we don't
- Requires a C-wire for most installations, which older homes may lack
- At $279.99 it is roughly twice the price of a good basic smart thermostat
- Some deeper features are Google Home-only
- Check HVAC compatibility before buying - it does not work with every system
The review
The Nest Learning Thermostat invented the category, and the fourth generation is the first full redesign in nearly a decade. After a full season of heating and shoulder-season use in a three-bedroom house, it is the smartest - and most expensive - thermostat we have used, and it is the one we would install in our own home.
Design: finally worth the wall
The fourth generation is a smaller, flatter, better-proportioned ring with a metal finish that looks like hardware rather than a gadget. The new Dynamic Focal Eye shows a large temperature readout when you approach and shrinks to a minimal dim dot when the room is empty, which fixes the old Nest habit of glowing in a dark hallway at 3 a.m.
The learning, the part you actually buy
This is the feature that made the original famous and it still works. You turn the dial when you want it warmer or cooler, and within about a week the thermostat has built a schedule from your behavior. After that, it mostly runs itself, nudging you toward efficiency with the green leaf whenever a change saves energy.
The fourth generation adds smarter defaults on top: it factors in when your system is likely to reach temperature, and the AI-driven savings mode adjusts setbacks automatically. Over a season this is real money. In our test house, the thermostat shaved a visible amount off monthly heating costs with no change in comfort, which is the entire point of the product.
Installation and compatibility
Installation is a 20-minute job for most people: kill the power at the breaker, photograph the old wiring, and match terminals. The catch is power. Most systems need a C-wire, and Google has tightened this requirement compared to earlier generations. The online compatibility checker is honest - use it before you order. If your system lacks a C-wire, add the cost of an adapter or an electrician to the $279.99.
Ecosystem and control
Matter support is the biggest practical upgrade. The thermostat now appears natively in Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home, so you are not locked into one app. Google's own app remains the richest interface for schedules and savings reports, and voice control from all three platforms works reliably.
One caveat: some of the deeper energy-report and vent-control features are Google Home only. If your household runs on Apple Home, you still get the learning and the savings, just with a thinner set of reports.
Should you buy it
If your system is compatible and you plan to stay in the home, this thermostat pays for itself within a season or two in most climates, and it is the nicest object on any wall. If you are renting, or your HVAC lacks a C-wire, buy a $90 programmable smart thermostat and save the difference.

Frequently asked questions
Does the 4th gen Nest require a C-wire?
Yes, for most installations. Google's online compatibility checker will tell you definitively for your specific HVAC system before you buy.
Can I use it with Apple Home?
Yes, via Matter. Core control and scheduling work in Apple Home; richer energy reports are found in the Google Home app.
How much does it actually save?
Savings depend on climate and usage, but programmable setback alone typically cuts 8-12% off heating and cooling costs, and the Nest's learning is designed to capture that without you managing a schedule.
